Through BCS Health, BCS is the internationally recognised body for Health Informatics in the UK, appointing representatives to the councils of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and the European Federation of Medical Informatics (EFMI).
The current representatives are:
IMIA was established in 1979, and is a subsidiary of the International Federation of Information Processing. The council consists of representatives from most countries of the world. It produces reports, and runs conferences and Working Parties on a variety of topics. IMIA also organises MEDINFO, a large international conference held every three years.
EFMI was founded in 1976 by a group of 10 countries, including the UK. It now encompasses 23 countries. The council comprises representatives from almost all the countries of Europe. It too produces reports, and runs conferences and Working Parties on a variety of topics. It also organises MIE (Medical Informatics Europe) – an international conference held each of the two years between MEDINFO conferences.
