BCS Registration and Standards Committee

Chair: Dr Christopher Ireland FBCS CITP

The responsibilities of the Committee are twofold. Firstly, the Committee carries responsibility for the regulatory function of BCS as the regulator and owner of standards for IT professionals; currently Chartered IT Professional and Registered IT Technician. Secondly it has governance responsibilities connected with admission of individuals to membership and ensuring the BCS meets its obligations as a Professional Engineering Institution and licensee of the Science Council.

The Committee oversees:

  • The definition of BCS standards for IT professionals and the policies that regulate admission to the registers
  • The licensing of awarding bodies and accreditation of certifications and other training and development schemes that remit all or part of further assessment for registration.
  • The review and maintenance of the structure for BCS membership
  • The formation and maintenance of all BCS policies necessary to manage the membership of individuals of the Institute
  • The assurance of the quality of assessment of all applications for membership and professional registration

Membership of the Committee is restricted to Chartered members of the Institute selected on the basis of their knowledge and expertise in the regulation and awarding of professional standards. All appointments are approved by BCS Trustee Board. Work groups will be convened from time to time to which members from all awarding bodies will be invited.
