3aaa's mini-guide to the levy and apprentice recruitment

Matt ElsonThe Apprenticeship Levy is a new government scheme that aims to not only create three million more apprenticeships by 2020, but to upskill the business needs of all organisations across the UK. The levy will come into effect in April 2017 with companies seeing their first payment being taken in May 2017. The Apprenticeship Levy will affect organisations who have an annual payroll of more than £3million. If your organisation falls into this category, you will pay the Levy whether you already employ apprentices or not.

All employers, whether they are Levy paying or not, will be financially supported by the government with regards to apprenticeship training. The levy that you pay will be used to finance a new digital account, where you can use vouchers to train existing staff or new recruits through apprenticeships.

No matter what your Apprenticeship Levy contribution is, 3aaa Apprenticeships can help you manage your apprenticeship training requirements.

How to recruit an apprentice

All potential apprentices apply to work with 3aaa through Apprentice Career. Apprentice Career is an online job engine that allows young people to see all the apprenticeship vacancies available right now.

It was established in 2016 and the portal has had more than half a million hits over the past four months. Potential applicants simply sign up to the website and will then be contacted by us to help them apply for their dream apprenticeship.

Applicants go through an initial interview process with our team before they are referred to you, the employer, ensuring all our applicants are of a high calibre and suit your business needs.

Once you have found your perfect apprentice (or apprentices, depending on your Levy spend) after your own interview process, someone from our Levy team will then meet with you again to complete the final contracts and to ensure your work environment meets health and safety regulations. After that the process is complete, it’s as easy as that.

Throughout the apprenticeship your apprentice will attend academy days at your local 3aaa apprenticeship academy, alongside assessor visits to your workplace, ensuring that everything is running smoothly.

What about existing staff?

As well as recruiting new staff, the Apprenticeship Levy allows you to upskill your current work force by putting these staff on a training programme that fits your business needs. The new government reform of apprenticeships means that anyone, regardless of age or previous qualification, is eligible to become an apprentice as of April 2017.

Choosing to upskill your current workforce, with apprenticeships that go up to Level 7, instead of hiring new apprentices, can not only improve your work force motivation but will also ensure that your employees are progressing throughout their career.

We understand that many employers want the opportunity to progress their current employees and management apprenticeships have been at the top of that agenda.
