Précis: Rail traffic management in the 21st century

Network Rail has announced plans to concentrate the management of the rail service in 14 regional rail operating centres. These will replace the current signal boxes, many of which date back to Victorian times.  The objective is to improve customer service whilst reducing the current costs of operations. The Traffic Management project is the technology workstream within an overall Operating Strategy programme. This programme covers the new buildings, new job roles, new business rules, the procurement of the technology and the business change project required to pull all these elements together and deliver the promised improvements. Every delayed train is full of passengers convinced that they can run the railway better than the people who are currently doing it. Come and hear how Network Rail is using information technology to improve the way it runs the railway, now and in the future.
