The PR & Communications Apprentice will learn and develop experience across a broad spectrum of PR, communications and social media working towards the Level 4 Diploma in Public Relations which is a nationally recognised qualification route.

The role holder will bring a passion for learning and an enthusiasm to develop knowledge and experience in the following areas of PR: writing for publication, selling in of stories, handling media requests, planning PR activities, managing the PR calendar, social media and events. The post holder will work to support the wider Community and Policy team, as well as the rest of the organisation to ensure that we maximise coverage for our work and our key messages.

Key responsibilities

  • Writing business communications, communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders, writing and proofreading for the media (this could include articles, news releases, blogs, and case studies);
  • Understanding when and which social media channel is appropriate and how it can be incorporated into a PR campaign. Using social media in a strategic and effective way for companies and brands;
  • Understanding how the media operates, dealing with day to day media inquiries, pitching stories and articles, building relationships with the media, using our media monitoring and distribution platform to create media lists, monitoring and reporting on press clippings, identifying potential media opportunities;
  • Supporting the team in creating new campaigns, working with the team to identify and create campaign stories and media angles for those stories;
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of PR activities, campaigns and measuring their impact;
  • Manage and develop the Comms calendar, feeding in internal stories and campaigns and where appropriate linking them with external activities;
  • Planning, structuring and delivering presentations internally and externally;
  • Conducting research for the team and reporting key details;
  • Assist in the planning, organising and co-coordinating events, meeting the objectives of the brief;
  • Maintaining diaries, booking and co-ordinating meetings and resources;
  • Ensuring all appropriate processes and regulatory requirements are adhered to at all times;
  • Developing professional relationships with colleagues and stakeholders;
  • Ensuring they are aware of work in progress and are briefed when any problems arise;
  • Build and maintain a network of other PR professionals;
  • Work cross functionally across the team and departments to build up over time a wide knowledge and understanding of the organisation with the aim of ensuring campaigns are integrated and opportunities are maximised;
  • Flexibility is required of all job holders to adjust responsibilities as required from time to time by their Line Manager/Divisional Director;

Skills, qualifications and knowledge

Education and qualifications

  • GCSE Grade C or above in English & Maths or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 A Levels or equivalent is desirable


No experience necessary but an interest in PR & communications would be advantageous

Special conditions

Occasional travel within the UK to attend meetings and events.
