GCS IT Recruitment Specialists

Happy birthday to you!

Photo of Chris Bartlett GCS IT Recruitment Specialists was founded in 1989, employs 75 people, and has clients in the UK and Europe. On behalf of the company, managing director Chris Bartlett congratulates the BCS on its anniversary and explains their collaboration on The GCS Women in IT Award.

CS IT Recruitment Specialists congratulate the British Computer Society on their 50th birthday. During this year GCS has started to work closely with BCS on their IT Professional Awards, having decided to extend our approach to reaching qualified IT professionals in the UK and overseas. What better place to start than with a membership organization of such distinguished pedigree?

There are many initiatives that GCS applauds but this year we are delighted to sponsor the BCS Women in IT Award. Now in its third year the Award aims to encourage more women to enjoy a career in IT, giving publicity to companies that have enhanced opportunities for women in IT departments.

During the course of GCS's discussions with the BCS prior to adopting the Award, we were concerned to hear that the number of women in IT is actually falling; women account for less than 20 per cent of those working in IT today. This is in spite of the fact that at A level girls outperform boys in IT-related subjects.

Fellow director Martin Smith and I feel that the promotion and encouragement of women in IT is good for the sector as a whole; mixedgender workforces not only enable a greater natural balance, they also seem to create a better staff working life.

This is certainly our experience with the 50:50 ratio of men and women in our own workforce and is all the more reason to sponsor the Award, which this year will bear our name, The GCS Women in IT Award.

This year's Award has attracted entries from both the public and private sectors, and the short-listed medallists are:

  • AstraZeneca plc;
  • ThoughtWorks Inc.;
  • West Dunbartonshire Council;
  • London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

GCS IT Recruitment Specialists

GCS was founded in 1989 by Martin Smith and me, both of us having begun our careers in IT. Today GCS supplies contract and permanent staff to SMEs and larger organizations, including the Bank of England, Ford, Barclays, the BBC, Citibank, Universal, Microsoft and Pfizer.

GCS is a thriving company with 75 members of staff and offices in Reading, the City of London, Caen, Paris and Amsterdam. Trading through both the recessions of the 1990s and the sharp downturn in the early part of this decade, we have grown consistently, expanding out of the Thames Valley and opening other national and international offices.

This includes an office in London in 2001, the year the company was featured in The Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Fast Track 100 List as the UK's 80th fastest-growing business. Today, GCS is one of the top 40 IT recruitment companies.

The company is still expanding and is currently sourcing additional premises in Reading, new premises in the Midlands and has just opened a new office in Paris. In the UK, GCS employed 25 extra staff in the first half of 2006. In France the team is also enjoying phenomenal growth, reflecting the buoyancy of the French market and the country's improved economy, and is on target to increase its business by 140 per cent in 2006.

Creating career opportunities and rewarding excellence are part of the culture GCS has developed for its staff. Sixty per cent of our gross profit is invested in staff salaries and we have also developed performance-related incentive schemes.

For example, in June 2006, 12 consultants who achieved exceptional business figures were treated to a trip to Las Vegas (half of them were women!). The next trip will be to Miami later this year. GCS staff strongly endorse community support and involvement in Reading, where our head office is based.

This includes sponsorship of Reading Football Club, support of the Reading Town Football Club and sponsorship of Reading's first ever Children with Special Needs Saturday Morning Rugby Club.

GCS wishes a happy 50th birthday, once again, to the British Computer Society. Both our organizations help fulfil the needs of IT professionals in the UK - we look forward to working more closely with the BCS.
