Synopsis:

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are used extensively by Internet services to help us find and classify information. This is how products like Google Photos can "magically" find all your photos of cats or trees - or cats up trees! But there's a new wave of AI called generative adversarial neural networks that's all about using AI to make things. In this talk I'll reflect on what we could use this technology for and the implications for people and society.

About the speaker:

Martin HamiltonMartin’s work at Jisc is all about generating and channelling new ideas, and building partnerships to bring them to fruition. He is particularly interested in the societal implications of ubiquitous robotics and artificial intelligence, and humanity’s emergence as a true interplanetary species.

Jisc is the UK higher, further education and skills sectors’ not-for-profit organisation for digital services and solutions. They champion the importance and potential of digital technologies for UK education and research; and do three main things:

  1. Operate shared digital infrastructure and services
  2. Negotiate sector-wide deals with IT vendors and commercial publishers
  3. Provide trusted advice and practical assistance for universities, colleges and learning providers

There will be an opportunity for networking after the presentation with sandwiches and wine.
