New Gem Event, New opportunity for yourselves to share your knowledge.

This event recognises :

  • That there is much experience in the room.
  • A diversity of interest
  • A passion for attendee participation

So we have created "Soapbox Gems". Basically the idea is that attendees get 5 mins to stand up and share a skill or experience for a 10 minute discussion. There would no time for prepared slides, just "Shoot from the hip"... However we hope folks will come to the front of the room so all can see. She/he may wish to simply share his/her passion for a concepts such as "Test Driven Development" or he/she may have an issue with something and wants some high level feedback.

As a result of feedback we are investigating the use of a whiteboard to produce some quick drawings...

We would plan to host about 4-5 of these gems in an evening.

If one gems was particularly popular then we would look to making an evening how of the subject at a future date.

The event will be managed by the "Master Of Ceremonies" ie me....

We will try to get a list of subject at the start of the event to keep things organised. Also the ordering can help the flow ie having related concepts next to each other. There may be a concept of voting. We will see how it works out. I would want to encourage more involvement and variety if possible.

Some potential gems:

  • Test Driven Development
  • NCrunch and Unit Testing
  • Model First versus Code First Data layers.
  • Dev Servers, RDP to Physical boxes or Cloud VMs?
  • SOLID Architecture
  • Serverless Functions
  • Real world usage of Azure in a SAAS business
  • OWASP, A framework for greater Web Application Security
  • IT in emergency services.
  • IT in space, developing for satellites.
  • Augmented Reality
  • IT Recruitment, how to get the best people.
  • How we do Agile
  • The world of Office 365
  • The world of Google Docs
  • The world of a successful Tech Company.
  • Ethical hacking
  • NoSQL within SQL, the power of JSON.

Gem presenters do not need to be experts. It is only 5 mins. they just need to have some knowledge or experience to seed the debate.
