BCS web design competition inspires the girls

08 July 2003

Hagbourne Church of England Primary School was voted Junior Winner of the BCS Oxford Branch 2003 School Web Design competition.

Teams from both primary and secondary schools within the county competed to win valuable prizes for their school and themselves. The Senior Winner was Didcot Girls School. Both school teams won a PC apiece and the winning teams were also presented individually with MP3 players and digital cameras.

A high number of entries for this high profile competition were recorded and it was particularly noted that the majority of the winning entrants were girls. The competition was designed to encourage pupil awareness of ICT and teams of schoolchildren were invited to design a useful and relevant website based on any subject suitable for school project work. This was also intended to provide a fun approach to the creative possibilities available from modern computer tools

Local and national businesses donated a range of prizes including two high specification PCs from RM; other prizes included a colour portable television, 100 interactive CD-Roms from Focus and a tour around Fox FM radio studios.

According to BCS Oxford Chair, Geoff Stone, "We were impressed with the large number of entrants from local schools and greatly assisted in organizing this event by the Oxfordshire Local Education Authority ICT team."
