Women celebrate five years of e-contact

14 March 2006

Happy Birthday Cake for BCS Women Group BCSWomen held a party last month in honour of its fifth birthday so that women who usually keep in contact via the internet would have a chance to meet up in person. More than eighty women went along to the bash in London.

Over the five years since Sue Black set up the BCSWomen, more than 500 women have joined in the chatroom buzz from all over the world.

Many of these women are specialists from a wide range of areas across the IT arena including system deployment, network administration, project management, people management, teaching and research.

The aims of BCSWomen are to encourage women and girls to consider a career in IT/IS; and to provide support for women working in this field. Despite women finding the work interesting and motivating, many women in IT miss female contact in their workplace and the group aims to help address this issue.

What next for BCSWomen? 'We look forward to welcoming more women to the egroup, and are organising events for us to meet up fact-to-face too' said Sue. 'Our next event is a career development workshop for women run jointly with Women@CL at the WWW2006 conference in Edinburgh on May 22nd. We hope to see you there.'
