Due to ongoing construction work, a lot of the available free off street parking is likely to be taken up by students. Participants are advised to use public transport (UWL is a 10/15 minute walk from South Ealing or Ealing Broadway tube stations and the No. 65 bus stops outside the front entrance). There is some free parking half way down Ascott Ave (off Warwick Rd), and pay and display parking on Ealing Common (continuation of Warwick Road), both a 10 minute walk away.

Simon Bates
Over the course of 15+ years in digital technology Simon has worked with all types and sizes of organisations from banking & retail through to media and manufacturing. Simon co-founded Manifesto Digital in 2011.

David Thompson
David heads up Android development at Manifesto. He has a passion for experimenting with and researching new technology.

Synopsis:

Following the successful formula of previous events the team from Manifesto will lead a hands-on workshop aimed at giving participants an introduction to Android development.

Pre-requisites

This is a hands-on session so please bring your own laptop, fully charged, with all the pre-requisite software installed. You’ll need to make sure that your laptop meets the following minimum system requirements:

Windows

  • Microsoft® Windows® 8/7/Vista/2003 (32 or 64-bit)
  • 2 GB RAM minimum, 4 GB RAM recommended
  • 400 MB hard disk space
  • At least 1 GB for Android SDK, emulator system images, and caches
  • 1280 x 800 minimum screen resolution
  • Java Development Kit (JDK) 7
  • Optional for accelerated emulator: Intel® processor with support for Intel® VT-x, Intel® EM64T (Intel® 64), and Execute Disable (XD) Bit functionality

Mac OS X

  • Mac® OS X® 10.8.5 or higher, up to 10.9 (Mavericks)
  • 2 GB RAM minimum, 4 GB RAM recommended
  • 400 MB hard disk space
  • At least 1 GB for Android SDK, emulator system images, and caches
  • 1280 x 800 minimum screen resolution
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
  • Java Development Kit (JDK) 7
  • Optional for accelerated emulator: Intel® processor with support for Intel® VT-x, Intel® EM64T (Intel® 64), and Execute Disable (XD) Bit functionality    

Note: On Mac OS, run Android Studio with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 for optimized font rendering. You can then configure your project to use Java Development Kit (JDK) 6 or JDK 7.

Linux

  • GNOME or KDE desktop
  • GNU C Library (glibc) 2.15 or later
  • 2 GB RAM minimum, 4 GB RAM recommended
  • 400 MB hard disk space
  • At least 1 GB for Android SDK, emulator system images, and caches
  • 1280 x 800 minimum screen resolution
  • Oracle® Java Development Kit (JDK) 7

Pre-requisite software

Android Studio Package (http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html). This will install the following software:

  • Android Studio IDE
  • Android SDK tools
  • Android 5.0 (Lollipop) Platform
  • Android 5.0 emulator system image with Google APIs
