Solent Air Watch (1)   Solent Air Watch (2)

Southampton was reported recently to have some of the poorest air quality in the UK and is projected to continue exceeding EU air quality regulations by 2020. Without sufficient incentive or strong public support to reduce emissions, the abundance of evidence and solutions to the issue amounts to nothing.

Solent Air Watch, a non-profit community project, sets out to engage our community in this issue by collecting air pollution data in an entirely transparent and educational manner. Our open source air quality monitor, known as Sniffy, has been developed so that the latest research and techniques can be applied. Our approach is highly collaborative and we welcome participants to be as involved (or not involved) in the technical aspects as they like.We will organise public walks and bike rides with sensors, together with direct streaming to a publicly accessible platform which will hold data on air quality, weather, ship movements and road traffic data. Participants will be able to view and explore their own sensor's data graphically and draw their own conclusions.

At this joint event between BCS Hampshire Branch, BCS GreenIT SG and Southampton Solent University, we will host an interactive and practical demonstration of the "Internet of Things" enabled air quality monitors. This will be followed by a round table discussion about the challenges our project will face and discuss solutions to meet them.
