Embracing the challenge, exploiting the opportunities: Building a world class IT profession in the era of global sourcing
The second report by the BCS Working Party on Offshoring (May 2006)
Ways of responding to the challenges posed by offshoring to the UK IT industry form the core of this BCS report.
The report sets the scene by looking at the latest developments in globalization, building on the findings of the November 2004 report, also compiled by the BCS Working Party on Offshoring.
Notably, captive operations abroad, rather than external companies, are becoming the preferred offshoring option. Suppliers are also moving up the value chain and offering more complex services.
The report moves on to devote a chapter to seven different ways in which BCS can help the UK’s IT industry embrace the challenges based at globalization:
- Promoting professional standards.
- Recruiting and educating IT professionals for the future.
- Developing successful careers.
- Working with government.
- Working with employers.
- Supporting innovation and celebrating excellence.
- BCS thought leadership role.
Although globalization is here to stay, the Working Party believes that the UK's IT profession can offer value-added skills and expertise and has the potential to embrace the challenges of globalization and exploit new opportunities that open up.
