Dear Members
Brief Overview
The ICO published its first CCTV Data Protection Code of Practice in 2000 to help CCTV operators comply with the Data Protection Act 1998 and follow good practice. As a result of the practical and legal developments since then, the ICO has just updated the CCTV Data Protection Code of Practice as a draft document for comment.
Consultation
The ICO has launched a public consultation to gain feedback on its draft revised Code and is particularly interested in hearing from all those who will be affected by it. ICO will assess the feedback received and issue a revised Code to replace the existing code.
BCS would like to submit a response to this consultation and is inviting BCS members to comment on the document. It is recognised that members are more likely to be interested in the issues relating to storage/disclosure and retention of the CCTV images.
Further information
The consultation document and background information is available on the Information Commissioner's Office website.
Time Frame
Please send all contributions to Liz Long, (liz.long@hq.bcs.org.uk) by Monday 15 October 2007 and these will be used to put together a BCS response.
Questions/Response Form
The ICO is inviting detailed comment on each section of the code and to this end has produced a response form. Where possible, it is suggested that you use the attached response form to make your comments to BCS, on points of the Code where you have a view.
