Second Health, London

'Second Health' is a Second Life style development in London - see secondhealth.wordpress.com

I'm not sure if I was asleep and missed any announcement on this, or whether it was launched quietly - but it looks like an interesting development, and far more exciting than anything the NHS has come up with so far (especially its clunky 'HealthSpace').

Second Health is developed by Imperial College London (ICL) in conjunction with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and is said to offer 'a shared vision of the future' based in the 'Framework for Action' document developed by Prof. Ara Darzi.

It requires you to sign up to Second Life (something I've still not managed to do, despite several attempts).

I have managed to sign up, and only after 2 attempts. The tutorial is quite easy to use, once you realise that you have to follow the path - Obvious really, but I did have fun flying around... Not been in the hospital yet - I will save that for the morning

Thanks for trying it out, Richard. As you point out, actually signing up for Second Life is not always easy; I had previously tried several times, unsuccessfully, through the main site, and then managed fairly easily through the Second Health route. Speed of interaction can be a bit 'flakey' when signed in to Second Life, although when I tried on a quiet Saturday morning and there were few users, then even over wireless connection, it was quite good. There do not seem to be too many people yet using Second Health, and again, the streaming videos can be slow then there are a lot of people signed in generally. The project has a 'community' that you can sign up for. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

I'm the project manager for Second Health at NPL so I was pleased to read that you found our sign up route into Second Life easy to use. There are movies on the website that illustrate patient journeys through the hospital - these were filmed in Second Life so could be useful for those who have not yet explored this virtual world.

For those that take the leap we have a streamlined orientation experience that takes you straight to the hospital campus. We are conducting research to help discover how effective this approach is for communicating complex healthcare delivery messages, so I hope that BCS members visiting Second Health will fill in our short survey (which they'll find in the central cafe). There is further background information in my blog posting at http://knowledgecast.wordpress.com/2007/09/01/health-campus/
