Amnesty International set for donations via mobiles

01/03/2007

Amnesty International has announced that it is to launch a system whereby donations can be made via mobile phones.

Instead of using the premium rate text message system, the charity intends to introduce a digital wallet method known as LUUP.

This will allow more money to go to the human rights organisation instead of allowing network operators to take a cut for using premium rate messages.

Donors can also send up to £800 via their mobiles, instead of having to stick to the £4.50 limit imposed by text messaging.

'LUUP presents a mobile payments option that is not only easy-to-use and very secure, but also ensures the donation ends up with those who need it most,' commented Katie Hart, new business development manager of Amnesty International UK.

Earlier this year, the Acorns Children's Hospice used the LUUP system to receive donations for its Have A Heart campaign on Valentine's Day.
