The impact of the collaboration between Nokia and Intel will go beyond smartphones, a technology market expert has claimed.
Kevin Burden, practice director of mobile devices at ABI Research, said that Intel's heritage in computer form factors and Nokia's desire to expand into products beyond mobile phones suggests that the relationship could do a great deal to shape the next generation of mobile computing devices.
'These two companies have tremendous scale with R&D capabilities that could have a significant impact on the smartphone market,' he explained, although any initial products will not emerge for at least a year.
The terms of the agreement between Nokia and Intel said that the pair want to work together on a variety of software, hardware and mobile internet services.
Previous research from Tellabs revealed that use of mobile internet devices among consumers is expected to grow despite the impact of the global economic downturn.
The study showed that 71 per cent of consumers expect to use mobile internet devices on a daily basis during the next two years.
