The implementation of super-fast broadband services is vital for the health of the UK's economy, a consumer website has said.
Introducing fibre-optics is important as the UK has a service economy which is dependent on being able to innovate and move quicker than any competitors, BroadbandChoices.co.uk explained.
The website said that it is 'vital' that the government works with ISPs to deliver universal access to 100Mbps broadband speeds by 2012.
Michael Phillips, product director of BroadbandChoices.co.uk, said: 'It is good that BT is taking the lead' as the promises made by the Carter report are insufficient to deliver a high-speed network.
'We welcome the announcement from BT although the proof of the pudding will be in the speeds this is able to deliver. Big ticket speed promises via new broadband technologies have disappointed in the past.'
BT unveiled plans to introduce improved broadband service to 1.5 million UK homes by the early part of summer in 2010.
An estimated one million households should have access by March.
