UN general secretary Ban Ki-Moon is calling on IT companies to adopt green policies and reduce greenhouse emissions.

In a speech at the ITU telecoms event in Geneva, the UN chief said he hopes IT firms will lead by example, because this sector is responsible for two to three per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The IT sector is so important in the fight against climate change because it can reduce emissions in other sectors by at least 15 per cent, says Ki-Moon.

IT firms can produce solutions that help organisations to address eco-issues for example.

It looks like the sector is already listening: in Newsweek's list of the top 500 green businesses, four out of five of the top five spots were taken by IT companies.ADNFCR-2575-ID-19403377-ADNFCR
