Chairman's Report 2009-2010

The Essex Branch has continued to strengthen over the last year as a result of an effective committee, excellent event speakers and a consistent high level of event attendance. The committee aims to build further on this success and in consideration of the increasing popularity of social media within our industry we have introduced Facebook and LinkedIn groups. This will assist in keeping Branch members engaged by providing additional channels for you to provide feedback to the committee and to enable member to member interaction.

We have continued to hold our regular committee meetings at County Hall in Chelmsford. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee for all their hard work and support during the year. On behalf of the committee I would like to thank Essex County Council for the provision of committee meeting accommodation and refreshments.

Branch events have been held at both Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Essex. Both universities have provided the Branch with excellent facilities all of which underpin the successful operation of the Branch. On behalf of the committee I would like to thank the universities for their support.

The Branch has continued its BCS awards scheme for outstanding students who are studying computing in local education institutions. The awards; a cheque, one year’s free BCS membership and a certificate were presented to students at Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Essex. The Branch has also attended a number of careers conventions at Essex schools to ensure that students receive an up to date view of the opportunities available in the IT industry to assist them in selecting their curriculum options.

Finally, I would like to thank the branch members who have attended the Branch events and help make the Essex Branch the success it is. Please remember this is your branch and the committee would appreciate any comments you have concerning the running of events and also your ideas for presentations. Please put your views forward to committee officers at public meetings or at any other time via the contact details on our Branch website,

Eamonn Burnell, Chairman
Essex Branch
