About the campaign

Welcome to the BCS role model calendar in support of LGBT+ History Month.

LGBT+ History Month is celebrated every February and aims to promote equality and diversity for the benefit of the public. 2017 also marks the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of male homosexuality in England and Wales, which significantly was the law that saw the computer scientist Alan Turing chemically castrated.

Research shows that organisations with more diverse teams perform better, and focus is too often diverted to gender balance. Whilst this is obviously of great importance, gender representation is not the only characteristic of a diverse workforce. This month we are supporting LGBT+ History Month by showcasing some great people and their experiences of being LGBT+ working in the STEM professions.

We hope you will find their stories informative and inspirational as we work towards raising awareness of issues affecting the LGBT+ community and ensuring that the talent of all individuals in our professions is nurtured and valued, and that everyone has access to equality of opportunity regardless of their protected characteristics, ability and background.
