Details:

A personal reflection on advances in software practice as seen through the activities of the Software Practice Advancement (SPA) specialist group since its foundation (as Object-Oriented Programming and Systems) in the mid-1980s. The topics presented at the group's conferences and meetings reflected key aspects of Software Practice over these years:

  • How practitioners have defined, understood and perceived the disciplines
  • The evolution of languages, tools, architectural patterns and approaches
  • Whether and how software practice has actually advanced over the years
  • What patterns, inventions and innovations have stood the test of time
  • What lessons of the past are still applicable today
  • How does today's changed technological and economic context challenge assumptions based on experience
  • What advances can we expect to see over the next decades

Immo HunekeAbout the speaker:

Immo is a veteran of software practice since 1980, a regular participant in SPA conferences, and has helped organise SPA monthly London events since about 1990, giving him some insight into how software practice has evolved over the years. He works as a senior software engineer for Zuhlke Engineering Ltd, part of the Zuhlke Engineering Group based in Zurich. When not battling with bash or jousting with jUnit, his favourite activity is singing - choral, solo, or blues. He keeps fit by being consistently late for trains and buses.
