The BCS Karen Spärck Jones Lecture honouring women in computing research took place on 24 May 2011, and was presented by Fran Allen, IBM Fellow Emerita at the T.J. Watson Research Laboratory.

Allen reviewed Karen Spärck Jones’ early and very significant contributions to the theory and practice of natural language processing and information retrieval in the late 1950s and then discusses her own experience with a code breaking system in the early 1960s for the US National Security Agency in the US, followed by a discussion of a real time, any language to any language phone translation system developed by Yuqing Gao at IBM Research, and deployed in Iraq.
