SYNOPSIS
This session will discuss the principles governing the performance behaviour of systems and their surrounding infrastructure. There are a wide range of issues to be considered, especially those affecting throughput, response times, scalability and availability. Performance is not something that can always be dealt with by system tuning or simply by buying bigger hardware. Availability and performance are inextricably linked. Performance issues frequently result in systems failing in some form or other, which affects availability and causes disruption to service. Most performance related failures are transient and complex, with multiple factors needing to be considered. Resolving complex problems can often require multiple actions to archive a good outcome. Understanding the characteristics that govern performance and overall system behaviour helps us to design and implement more reliable systems that can cope with changing workloads.
