Chairman's Report 2015/16 - November 2016

The Chairman, Geoff Staples, reported that the current Specialist Group membership is 977 with members across 46 countries and approximately 17% of our members outside the UK.

The Specialist Group also would like to thank the speakers.

During the year, the Quality SG has successfully undertaken 26 activities (compared with 20 last year) including 20 full-day training sessions, each lasting 1 or 2 days, in London for the Under-employed, free for BCS members, kindly given by Tom Gilb Hon FBCS. Further courses  have been given and are planned in 2016/17 with Tom Gilb all of which are still free for BCS members.

Two international Quality SG conferences were organised. SQM 2016, and INSPIRE 2016 were held at Bournemouth University , with authors and delegates come from various countries, including Cyprus, Greece, Sri Lanka as well as the UK.. Conference papers were presented also remotely. Two books of the conference proceedings were printed, “Systems Quality: Trends and Practices”  ISBN 978-0-9932889-2-0 with editors  Keith Phalp. Vasilis Katos, Sofia Meacham, Margaret Ross, Geoff Staples; and “Education Quality Matters: Trends and Challenges” ISBN 978-0-9932889-3-7, with editors Keith Phalp. Vasilis Katos, Sofia Meacham, M Ross, G Staples, J Uhomoibhi

I would want to give a special thanks to Sofia Mecham, also Elli Geogiadou and Peter Linecar for the effort and support, in the preparation, during and after the SQM and INSPIRE conferences, when Margaret Ross was undergoing and recovering from surgery.

The winners of the SQM 2016 student presentation prizes were

Kevin Mcneill , with Rebecca Rogers as the Runner-Up, both from Bournemouth University

Joint events were held with the BCS Hampshire Branch, BCS Agile SG, BCS Business Change SG, e-learning SG and the BCS Entrepreneurs SG

The aim for next year is to hold events in other locations and to hold webinars.

I would like to thank the committee and the speakers for all their help and their support throughout the year, and to report that Margaret Ross had been identified by Computer Weekly as as one of the 50 Most Influential Women in UK IT in 2016
