Overview of CITP

Man similing

The CITP standard has been developed in consultation with public and private sector employers and the academic community and applicants under go a rigorous assessment. Aligned with The Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA), the UK Government backed competency framework, CITP is the benchmark of IT excellence.

  • 3 stages of assessment
  • Online application process
  • 'Breadth of Knowledge' test
  • Online interview & presentation
  • 'Certificate of Current Competence' with 5 yearly revalidation

Holding CITP status reflects your integrity, professionalism and dedication to your work. Your status will be recognised in a formal listing of Chartered IT Professionals on a register available to potential clients and employers on the BCS website as a resource for finding leading IT practitioners.

On award of Chartered IT Professional status you will receive a Certificate of Current Competence, valid for 5 years. After 5 years you will need to renew your Certificate of Current Competence. You will retain your CITP post nominals as long as you remain a member.

Experience required

The scope of IT is very broad and applicants for CITP may be involved in a wide variety of roles.

However, successful candidates for CITP will have spent 3 of the past 5 years working in roles demanding skills equivalent to SFIA Level 5 and carrying significant responsibility, full accountability and presenting a challenging range of complex work activities.

Successful applicants will typically have 8-10 years of IT work experience and a broad knowledge of IT. A deep knowledge of a chosen specialism is also required. Take a look the CITP Assessment Criteria for more details.

If you are not yet ready for CITP status, you can still take advantage of the many career and professional development opportunities available through BCS membership.
