BCS received its Royal Charter in 1984 and has established the Chartered IT Professional standard. Chartered IT Professionals are identified by the post nominals 'CITP'.

CITP status is gaining increasing national and international recognition as the benchmark of excellence for IT professionals. It provides evidence of an individual’s commitment to their profession and endorsement of their experience and knowledge.

The Institute awards CITP status to its members and also works with membership organisations, certification bodies and employers to promote the standard.
