The Ethics Group reports to the BCS Trustee Board through the Institute’s Professionalism Board. In this way the group contributes to the BCS Professionalism initiative and development of BCS Policy.
The group is responsible for promoting awareness and engagement with the ethical issues associated with the advancement of Information Technology science and practice and ensuring that Ethics is fully embedded in everything the Institute says and does.
The group is also a pro-active and monitoring body to help BCS members and the public at large enjoy the benefits of IT whilst making them aware of existing and potential ethical misuse and ways of avoiding damage to the public good. The group keeps the BCS Code of Conduct under regular review.
Members of this group have been selected to offer different perspectives on ethics and technology and represent the views and interests of key stakeholders in the IT enterprise. Their shared aim is to promote awareness of the ethical dimension of Information Technology. Through their diversity of experience and with a common aim of promoting good use of IT systems the group will be well placed to contribute to BCS policy, and influence the positive impact of IT within society.
The Chair of the Ethics Group is Ian Harris FBCS. Ian is also a member of the BCS Professionalism Board.
