Spam-fighting recommendations given

04/04/2007

An organisation representing the interests of ISPs has published recommendations on how providers can tackle spam.

The Internet Services Providers' Association (ISPA UK) said that the internet industry, the government, web users and law enforcement agencies should all work together to fight unsolicited bulk email (UBE).

It advised consumers and businesses to deploy firewalls on their PCs and report all cases of spam getting through to their inboxes.

'Effective abuse procedures should be in place to make reporting easier. Customers need to be educated on the nature of UBE, how to protect their PCs with firewalls and anti-virus software, and should also be informed of other services provided by their ISPs to help keep UBE to a minimum,' commented ISPA Council chair Jessica Hendrie-Liano.

Earlier this week, a report from security software firm MessageLabs revealed that 76.3 per cent of all emails sent in March were spam.
