Interaction specialist group: Practice

Interaction promotes the take-up of sound usability practices in business and industry, and supports companies and individuals in building awareness of HCI and good practice.

Practitioner reps

If you are an HCI practitioner in business or industry, and wish to find out more about the group's activities, or stimulate discussion about the particular challenges of promoting HCI in commerce, then contact the chair. They are members of the business and practitioner community with active interests in HCI and form a key part of the Interaction specialist group's executive committee.

We are happy to support local initiatives for bringing together developers, customers and researchers with HCI interests. If you'd like to develop a forum in your region, perhaps an informal monthly meeting, then contact the chair of the Interaction specialist group. An example of such an initiative that we have supported is the South West Usability Group (SWUG).

Industry HCI events

The Interaction specialist group is always keen to support and promote events around the UK at which practitioners and interested members of business and industry are welcome.

Events are generally advertised on the events section of this website, on our sister site usabilitynews.bcs.org and via our HCI News Service. Events include conferences, workshops, tutorials and informal meetings where participants can talk, learn about the issues or simply meet people with similar interests and challenges.

The major event of each year is the Interaction specialist group's annual 5 day conference. In addition to items of interest throughout the week, Industry Day is specifically dedicated to presentations and keynote speakers drawn from business, emphasising 'HCI in the trenches', bridging from academia to business, and other practitioner concerns. In addition, high quality Tutorials bring you up to date with user-centred design tools and techniques.

Accreditation scheme

Interfaces is developing an HCI Accreditation Scheme, in conjunction with Lloyd's Register Industry Division.

It is intended that accreditation will be available to individuals and to companies who demonstrate their commitment to and application of sound HCI practices.

For more details, contact Jonathan Earthy at Lloyd's Register.
