BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, has welcomed the Science and Technology Select Committee's call for the government to increase the general public's understanding of personal online security.
In July last year, the committee launched an inquiry to examine malware and cybercrime and published its findings yesterday (February 2nd).
It now wants the government to embark on an awareness campaign using TV and the internet to promote better safety online.
BCS was involved in the inquiry process and gave evidence to the committee in November 2011.
This response was co-ordinated with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
It recommended that the government should take responsibility for the prevention of cybercrime.
In response to yesterday's announcement, Adam Thilthorpe, director of public affairs for BCS, said: "As the Chartered Institute for IT, we gave evidence to the committee on this important topic and we welcome this report which urges the government to promote the need for online security provision."
