BCS CESG Certified Professional Scheme goes UK-wide

30 September 2013

BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, has today extended its BCS CESG Certified Professional Scheme, for Information Assurance (IA) professionals, to the whole of the UK private sector. Launched almost a year ago, the scheme has so far only been available to government employees or those working on government contracts.

Adam Thilthorpe, Director of Professionalism, BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, says: “We are delighted to be rolling out the BCS CESG Certified Professional Scheme to anyone in the UK working in information assurance. Information Security and Assurance issues are now pivotal to businesses. With 93% of organisations experiencing a security breach last year1, it is vital that UK plc ensure their information is safe and that the right people with the right skills are working with their organisations.”

The scheme certifies IA specialists against specific IA roles and skills aligned to the competency framework Skills for the Information Age (SFIA) and BCS’ SFIAplus. It offers three levels of certification; practitioner, senior practitioner and lead practitioner, and covers six roles identified by CESG within IA including: Security and Information Risk Advisor, IA Architect, IA Accreditor, IA Auditor, IT Security Officer and Communications Security Officer.

Chris Ensor, Deputy Director for the National Technical Authority for IA, CESG says: “Our objective is to increase the UK’s IA capability in all fields of cyber security and meet one of the objectives of the UK Cyber Security Strategy, to build the UK’s knowledge, skills and capability. The CESG Professional Certified Scheme enables all those working in IA to demonstrate their professionalism and skills, providing a clear career path with opportunities to progress in information assurance.”

The Institute already has considerable and proven expertise in certification and the assessment of Information security excellence and experience across the profession through its IT Governance and Information Security certification portfolio and career path. In addition, the Institute is also home to the BCS Security community of expertise.
