SYNOPSIS
In scientific circles, everyone knows that more computing power can lead to bigger discoveries. This is the case at Durham University which is unlocking insights into our universe with a powerful High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster from Dell EMC.

Durham is part of DiRAC, a distributed UK national HPC facility. DiRAC, which stands for “Distributed Research using Advanced Computing,” and is devoted to theoretical modelling and HPC-based research in particle physics, astrophysics, cosmology and nuclear physics, all areas in which the UK excels. DiRAC arms researchers with a variety of compute resources, matching machine architecture to the algorithm design and requirements of the research problems to be solved.

DiRAC was established to provide distributed HPC services to the research community. This technology allows scientists to test their theories and run simulations from the data gathered in experiments. Using DiRAC the UK science community is pursuing cutting-edge research on a broad range of topics, from simulating the entire evolution of the universe, from the big bang to the present, to modelling the fundamental structure of matter. DiRAC is both an academic-led and an academic-supervised facility and our systems are specifically designed to meet the different HPC community needs.

The presentation will be attended by Dell EMC and will feature an opportunity to visit one of the university Data Centres.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES
Headline Speaker: Dr Lydia Heck

Dr Lydia Heck started buying, configuring and administering super computers as far back as 1988. In 2001 she became the manager of the brand new COSMA (Cosmology Machine) starting with COSMA1 - Titania and Centaur. Since 2012 with COSMA5 the system has become part of the DiRAC national facility. Lydia’s team are now running COSMA7 with 452 systems, at total of 12,400 Skylake Gold 5120 cores and a total of 220 TByte of RAM.

In August 2018 she handed over the system management to Alastair Basden and became DiRAC Technical Manager and part of the national DiRAC management team.
