Synopsis

Overview: BCS influence and improve computing education in all its forms to improve opportunities for young people, society and the economy. Our members are at the heart of our community. This presentation aims to explain BCS membership and the career paths and professional recognition available to members of the BCS community. It will explore how current students can gain the recognition as trusted professionals, help elevate career development and share expertise in the growing industry.

In addition, group CEO, Rashik Parmar, will share his perspective on future of work in the digital world and sustainability and responsible computing that plays in combatting global issues. He explores how digital technology is essential to achieving that by driving efficiencies, innovating, and factoring sustainability into industry operations.

About the speakers

Thayeba Hussain

Thayeba is a membership professional with a keen interest in driving membership growth and engagement in the technology sector. She is currently the Membership Engagement Coordinator at BCS and had previously worked in charitable organisations, namely in cyber security and health & safety. Her role helps facilitate the wider membership and community base at BCS to create a network of likeminded tech professionals from various career stages.

Thayeba leads the digital skills bootcamp sessions that brings learners and early career candidates to be a part of the growing BCS membership and supports with career development through BCS benefits. She also welcomes new volunteers at BCS and enjoys connecting with likeminded experts in the industry via socials. Thayeba is passionate about being a valued member of BCS and aims to be a positive advocate for the tech community while simultaneously fostering the BCS core mission; Making IT Good for Society.

Rashik Parmar

Rashik is Group CEO of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. Rashik was until July 2022 the IBM Fellow and Vice President responsible for creating and driving IBM’s European technical strategy. His focus has been helping clients on the journey to becoming a cognitive enterprise, leveraging Cloud, AI and IoT technologies whilst creating a dependable IT platform. Drawing on thirty-nine years of practical experience in IBM, he is uniquely placed in developing strategies that are realistic whilst providing tangible business impact. He has worked with financial, retail and manufacturing clients on IT transformation projects of all sizes. Overall, he specialises in ensuring the technical success of complex IT projects that transform business models. Some of his work is summarised in the HBR Article he co-authored “New Patterns for Innovation” – Jan-Feb 2014.

Rashik was appointed to the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership Board, where he is Deputy Chair of the Employment and Skills Committee helping to develop innovative strategies to accelerate the growth of this £55bn marketplace.

Rashik also chairs the Board of Trustees for IVE, a progressive training company developing creativity as the path to social mobility.

Rashik was awarded an MBE as part of the HRH Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday honours for his contribution to business and innovation.
