Nominations Committee

Chair: Bob Harvey CEng FBCS CITP

The role of Nominations Committee has expanded and evolved considerably over the past few years. Its Terms of Reference are included in the Members’ Regulations. The Committee is responsible for:

  1. Nominations for the offices of President, Deputy President and Vice President to be elected by Council.
  2. Making recommendations to Trustee Board for the appointment of the Chief Executive when the post becomes vacant.
  3. Nominations for public honours.
  4. Nominations for Distinguished Fellowship.

Nominations Committee’s prime responsibility is therefore succession planning to ensure that BCS enjoys a well managed succession of highly competent candidates to fill senior honorary officer positions. To help it fulfil this responsibility the Committee maintains a list of possible candidates for these senior volunteer positions and offers suggestions from the list to Vice Presidents who are looking to fill board / committee vacancies. (The term “board / committee” here indicates a group established by Trustee Board and reporting to it.) This helps those members who meet the competency requirements for BCS senior positions to develop their knowledge and understanding of the Institute.

New strategic board / committee members are proposed by Vice Presidents and approved by Trustee Board. Trustees receive relevant background information on all candidates. Nominations Committee works closely with Vice Presidents to identify potential board / committee members and future Deputy President candidates. Vice Presidents carry much of the responsibility for developing talented individuals through membership of their boards / committees.

Nominations Committee is reviewing and further developing competency requirements for honorary roles and will be seeking comments and contributions from Council.
