Abstract

The Internet and the latest computing technologies are a pervasive force in today's society. They provide global access to information as well as new and innovative ways of doing business. They are a vehicle for education, recreation and much more. Unfortunately they are also a providing the context and the vehicle for illegal entrepreneurial activities, which target businesses and individuals via diverse and extensive abuse and attacks. As increasing numbers of individuals and businesses connect to the Internet it is essential that you, as a business professional or private individual, are not only aware of the threats and vulnerabilities associated with business enabling computing technology and the Internet, but that you are also aware of the responses available to these threats and vulnerabilities.

Certain areas of digital crime have crystallized in the last 2-3 years to the extent where several types of such crimes are now being offered as a paid for service that can be bought just as in any other commercial area. Your competitors on the global arena may well be using these services for competitive advantage.

Digital crime is now considered as the number one threat to the UK national security and businesses by the Home Office. Most developed nation's governments, including the UK and the US government list Electronic/Digital Crime as the number one threat to their economies and security. The global dimensions of this problem do not make addressing this problem easy, while the impact on businesses and governments worldwide continues to grow.
