The largest service provider to citizens is the Public Sector.

On the first part of this event we will be discussing how the Civil Service Fast Stream Scheme and specifically the Digital and Technology Fast Stream is identifying, selecting and then cultivating the future digital leaders of the UK Public Sector. These future leaders will design, build and run digital services, which are transforming the lives of millions, such as the MOT service.

On the second part, we will have the opportunity to hear in more detail about the award winning MOT digital service, which is affecting not only the motorists in the UK but also directly supporting about 23,000 businesses with 80,000 users.

Part 1: 'Growing our own future leaders'

Iain will discuss government's digital, data and technology talent development programmes, focusing on the Fast Stream. Iain will cover the strategy for meeting future business needs and the operational structure of a large-scale talent programme. Katherine, a Digital and Technology Fast Streamer will present her journey, aims and aspirations. 

About the Speakers

Iain BoydIain Boyd,
Programme Manager, Digital and Technology Fast Stream

Iain has worked inside and outside of government for 10 years managing portfolios with senior clients, ministers and C-level executives in technology, media, energy and finance. He currently manages the UK government's flagship talent development programme for digital, data and technology, Fast Stream. 

The scheme is aimed at developing the leaders of the future and has a growing cohort of over 150 graduates working right across government and the UK. Outside of work, Iain enjoys spending time with his children, music, has a passing interest in most sports and is passionate about travel.

Katherine O'Doherty,
3rd year DaT Fast Streamer

Katherine O'DohertyKatherine graduated in Law in 2011 and spent a few years working as a Membership Manager for a small not for profit in the healthcare space. Inspired by the innovations in digital healthcare to look further into a career in Digital and Technology, Katherine found the Fast Stream scheme! Katherine has since worked in five different roles in government as well as an industry placement as a User Researcher with a tech start-up.

‘The Driving Force Enabling Digital Transformation’ 

Alex will explain how the DVSA have successfully delivered their award winning digital MOT Service and their plans for the future.  He will also highlight how the success of the transformation has been down to continuous collaboration between users and the project team and how this has resulted in a digital service that is easy to use, flexible, less expensive and innovative for the Public Sector.

Alex FiddesAlex Fiddes,
Programme Delivery Executive, DVSA

Alex leads the delivery of 4 major Agile Programmes of work in DVSA, MOT Testing Services, Commercial Vehicle Services, Driver and Rider Services and Theory Test.  He is a strong advocate of user experience based developments, adopting Agile methodologies across the whole end-to-end service delivery model. He has successfully led the MOT team through a transformation journey moving to Cloud Based Computing, enabling bring your own device for the 80,000 users and significantly reducing the operating costs of the service.

Alex is now embarking upon leading the development of the three new digital services, Commercial Vehicle & Driver Rider Services and Theory Test bringing Agile methodologies and Government Digital Service (GDS) best practice to the teams supporting delivery and live service.
