Liz Wright is a digital marketing apprentice, but it’s not her first career. She spent three years at university, studying to be an interior designer. Whilst there, Liz said she could ‘let rip’ with her creativity but following graduation she says the role didn’t live up to expectations.
The corporate world of interior design hadn’t inspired her, and she didn’t feel her skills were being used to their full potential. After working as an interior designer for two years, she then moved on to photo retouching and administration in search for the ideal career.
Instead of going back to university, she decided to do an apprenticeship at an email marketing company. Here Liz explains why she changed career, and what she likes about her new role.
‘When I came out of university, I really struggled to find my first job and after I found one, it was not what I was expecting. I was trying to find my way for a while as I wanted a role that suited me and my creativity.
‘I did research and found that marketing is a creative role, so I spoke to a few people who worked in this area. They told me there were so many different types of jobs and sectors to work in and this encouraged me to make the move.’
Why did you opt for an apprenticeship?
For you

‘Because I was a career changer, I found it difficult to get my foot in the door as most employers wanted experience, a qualification, or both. I couldn’t afford to take an unpaid internship, and I didn’t have the time to go back and complete another degree.
'I also no longer live at home, so I have bills to pay and this gave me an opportunity to earn while I learn. When the apprenticeship was suggested to me, it just made sense. So far, I’ve really enjoyed being hands on, learning from the ground up and being in a supportive team environment.’
Tell me about what you do now
‘I’m working with lots of clients on marketing projects, but I also get to help out with company branding and projects as the company grows. I really enjoy building out email automations and complex customer journeys for our clients, as I get to use both my creative and strategic skills.’
What’s your advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship?
‘For anyone considering an apprenticeship, I would say do some research and find out if an apprenticeship is right for you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn what skills and qualifications will lead to the career you want.
'For me, getting a digital apprenticeship was important as most industries are heading in that direction. Digital roles are both challenging and exciting due to all the innovation in technology, but they are also incredibly rewarding and can build invaluable skills.’
What about the future?
‘I would like to stay with the same company, and progress further. I’m always interested in learning so I might look into more qualifications or training that would be beneficial to my role.
