Synopsis and conference schedule

The BCS Data team, BCS Women and DAMA UK recognise the different areas in which diversity or lack of diversity impacts us. We are interested in bringing people from more diverse backgrounds into data roles, we want to show that data is not just a question of technology, we need to be aware of the growing challenge of ensuring our AI and ML data sets are more representative. We have talks around each of these dimensions... from recruitment, looking at data analytics and AI, looking at collection and reporting of DEI data...As data professionals at all levels, we aim to provide you with inspiration, models of diversity and diversity data that have been proven to work and a forum for asking questions!

Day 1 - Monday 12 June

Speaker: Tristi Tanaka

Synopsis: This session aims to provide tips on how to enable participation from a different range of perspectives. We will also provide a sneaky peek at the week ahead!

Biography: Tristi Tanaka has worked over 20 years in and with technologists across US NGO, UK public sector organisations and global private sector firms. She is in Computer Weekly’s 2023 UKTech50 long-list. Currently working in the NHS Black Country ICB, she supports the design, development and delivery of the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Clinical Information Officer’s priorities on research, innovation and transformation through leadership and digital enablers.

Speaker: Prerna Tambay

Synopsis: We will explore creating a business case for EDI. We will discuss relevant interventions to improve EDI efforts. Finally, we will showcase the role of AI and Analytics in improving EDI interventions.

Biography: Prerna Tambay is an engaged scholar specialising in Future of Work, the Role of HR in the Digital Age and People Analytics. I work as a Senior lecturer at the University of Bedfordshire. I lead the MSc IHRM programme.

Speaker: Jenny Andrew

Synopsis: Exploring the neurodiversity advantage in data teams, and how we can support ‘divergent thinkers’ to thrive in data careers.

Biography: Jenny Andrew is a career trade unionist who applies her data skills in the pursuit of safe, fair, and respectful work. Herself a late-recognised autistic, from a very neurodiverse family, she has a strong personal interest in campaigning for neuro-inclusive workplaces. Marco Bernardi is Head of Design at Applied Works, and former Design Director at Accurat in Italy. In his professional experience, he worked with data to craft analytics tools, experimental interactive experiences and engaging data-driven narratives.

Speakers: Marco Bernardi and Grace Treacher

Synopsis: Good data design can create a shared understanding around an issue. Bad design can confuse, exclude and misinform. This talk shares how design has been used to transform history, and how an inclusive approach can make it even better.

Biographies: Marco Bernardi is also a visiting lecturer on data narratives, and is a strong advocate for user-centred design.

Grace Treacher is a designer at Applied Works, and recently graduated with a BA (hons) Graphic Design from Kingston University. Grace has a particular interest in how data can be made more accessible and inclusive.

Day 3 - Wednesday 14 June

Speaker: Tosin Sonubi 

Synopsis: People have long sort to improve inclusion within their spaces. But, knowing how to measure or even define inclusivity has remain elusive. Data driven inclusion provides people an actionable insights in order to improve inclusion.

Biography: Tosin is a diversity and inclusion advocate. A diversity advocate in the financial and insurance sectors, Tosin has taken the lead in diversity and inclusion in each organisation in which she has worked. Tosin also volunteers in education to advocate diverse pathways into IT and data roles.

Day 4 - Thursday 15 June

Speakers: Paul Dettman and Roisin Wherry

Synopsis: An introduction to Grayce and their work with Gen-Z candidates and employers to create pathways to filling the data skills gap. Brief talks followed by a panel discussion.

Biography: Paul Dettman is a Product Manager Grayce, Management and business consultant specialising in technology. Expert in data analytics and BI, ML/AI, SaaS, Cloud. Worked for many global blue chip companies, Fortune 500 and FTSE-100. Deep experience in life sciences, financial services, energy, manufacturing, government, utilities, automotive, entertainment.

Roisin Wherry is a proud self-taught coder with a passion for supporting others launching their careers in technology and creating diverse and inclusive environments. She has been pivotal in the design, launch and delivery of new data and technology development programmes at Grayce which have supported over 100 new professionals launching their careers in data.

Speakers: Catherine King and Kyle Winterbottom

Synopsis: A walk through the current trends in the data & analytics talent market, paying particular attention to the challenge of attracting non-technical professionals into data and building diverse data teams and paths to diversity of data leadership.

Biography: Catherine King is committed to providing a meaningful connection to senior executives in the areas of Digital, Data, Analytics, Information, Business Development & Innovation via industry-leading content & insights. Her expertise extends to hosting and moderating large-scale events, spearheading communities and directing, producing, and hosting industry-leading podcasts.

As an award-winning professional with extensive experience directing and designing Conferences, Bespoke Roundtables, Online events, and more, Catherine is particularly passionate about promoting diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. She is a vocal ally and advocate.

Kyle Winterbottom is the Founder & CEO of Orbition Group, a talent solutions and advisory business that operates exclusively within the Data & Analytics space across the UK, Europe and USA. Kyle also founded and hosts the Driven by Data Community comprising three components; Driven by Data: The Roundtable, Driven by Data: The Podcast and Driven by Data: The Mentorship.

Speaker: Lisa Allen

Synopsis: In this talk we'll explore diversity challenges, biases in data collection use and sharing collection and how responsible practices can help to address them.

Biography: Lisa Allen is a data professional and has led many data teams in the public sector in the UK. She has experience across data disciplines including open data, data protection, data transformation, developing data strategies and frameworks to implement data governance.

Synopsis: Data leaders and academic experts discuss the key topics arising from the weeks events. The audience is invited to propose the question on their minds. The panel will be chaired by Nic Granger, a data leader in the energy transition.

Having worked internationally and in the UK in healthcare, local and central government, as Director of Corporate for the North Sea Transition Authority she currently leads a diverse team delivering services including digital transformation, data policy, digital services, IT and finance.
