Beneath declining Computer Science enrolments, a broader digital workforce is emerging through an expanding mix of educational pathways. Julia Adamson MBE FBCS CITP explains.

Every year around this time, I sit down with the latest UCAS, JCQ, CCEA and WJEC figures and try to work out what they're actually telling us. This year's numbers made me pause for longer than usual, because the obvious headline Computing is shrinking isn't quite the whole story.

Computing acceptances to UK undergraduate courses fell 7% this year, against a 2% rise across all subjects. That's a bigger gap than I'd like to see, and it's not confined to one group: male acceptances fell 8%, female acceptances fell 4%. But look a little closer and there's something worth holding onto.

The male:female ratio across all ages narrowed from 3.7:1 to 3.5:1, and at 18-year-old level it dropped to a new low of 3.7:1. Fewer people are choosing Computing overall, but on both measures, the ones who are choosing it are a little more evenly split than they were last year. 
 
The subject-level picture varies more than you'd expect across our four nations. A-level Computer Science entries grew 2% in England, but fell 3% in Northern Ireland and 14% in Wales. And in every nation female students continue to outperform male students at grades A*-C.
 
Here's the bit I find most interesting, though. The real growth isn't happening under the 'Computer Science' label at all it's happening right next door. Digital Technology A-level rose 26% in Wales and 3% in Northern Ireland, with female participation growing faster than male in both. 

T-level passes across the three Digital pathways were up strongly too. Digital Support Services rose 56%, Digital Production, Design and Development rose 16%, and Digital Business Services rose 8%. Every one of those students, whichever Digital T-level they completed, can now claim free Part RITTech Recognition the moment they finish, giving them a foot on the professional ladder before they've even started their first job. 

And, apprenticeships are moving fastest of all: Digital Technology apprenticeship starts in England rose 17% in 2024/25, faster than any other major sector, with higher-level and degree-apprenticeship-equivalent starts growing quickest. Female representation on those apprenticeship routes is still low, at around one in five starts, but it's rising quickly from a small base.
 
Put it all together and I don't read this as young people, especially young women, turning away from digital careers. I read it as them finding their way in through doors that don't have 'Computer Science' written above them.

BCS accreditation covers the great majority of UK computing-related degrees, so a graduate pathway into the profession is already built into most courses. Whichever door someone comes through, T-level, apprenticeship or degree, the pathway into the profession already exists.

Our job now is to make sure everyone taking it knows that, and walks straight in.
