Year of Engineering

Supporting future engineers

January 2018 saw the launch of two separate campaigns, both aimed at encouraging young people to consider a career in engineering. As one of the leading professional engineering institutions, BCS is supporting both campaigns, and there are some opportunities for BCS members to get involved.

Year of Engineering

Year of Engineering is a year-long, cross-government initiative, aimed at raising the profile of engineering as a career amongst 7 to 16-year olds and widening the pool of young people that consider engineering as a career.

This site has a huge range of teacher resources, inspirational videos, as well as ‘Find an Event’ map, which BCS events, relevant to the audience can be added.

This is Engineering

This is Engineering is run by The Royal Academy of Engineering, and is a multi-year campaign aimed at secondary school children. The campaigns main channel will be on-line, and the audience is the young people, teachers, parents, careers advisers and ‘informal advisers’, i.e. grandparents.

This site links out to Tomorrow’s Engineers, with lots of great sources of information for young people.

How can you get involved?

  • As a member, when speaking to young people about their career choices, please send them to any of these sites, there are some really inspirational videos and follow-up resources available.
  • Collectively, when we host or sponsor events for school-age children, please take the opportunity to post the details on the Year of Engineering Event website, and send us through photos from the event.
  • Both campaigns are looking for case studies, potential ambassadors, good stories (across the year) and photographs - please feel free to send them to us and we’ll pass them on, making sure that BCS is credited.
