SYNOPSIS
Artificial intelligence is a fast-moving area of research at present, with the considerable disruptive potential to current technologies. Board games have been an important area of application for artificial intelligence algorithms for a very long time, but recently computer games appear to offer an even more complex and challenging area of application, both in terms of gameplay, game design, and as a novel and challenging environment for algorithms to learn. Video games continue to become more diverse and sophisticated year on year; the two fields are starting to have considerable cross-disciplinary influence, which this talk will explore.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
Dr. William Sayer
Started playing games on the BBC Micro, and have been fascinated with how they work. This drove me to start learning to program at the age of seven, and I’ve been doing it ever since. During my time at University, I became really interested in Artificial Intelligence, and this led me onto my Doctorate, which was based on applying optimisation and AI to engineering problems. I’ve always enjoyed helping others learn, and it’s even better when it’s a subject you love.
