BCS is pleased to announce the appointment of Jonny Sammut FBCS as the new Chair of the BCS Wales Hub. With over two decades of experience across both public and private sectors, Jonny brings a bold, inclusive and visionary approach to leading the digital and technology agenda in Wales.
Jonny currently serves as Director of Digital Services at the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust. He is a BCS Fellow, Chartered IT Professional, and a Leading Practitioner with FEDIP (the Federation for Informatics Professionals in Health and Care). His previous roles include chief of digital and innovation at North West Ambulance Service and director of business intelligence at Health Management, an occupational health organisation.
Earlier in his career, after starting out in sales, Jonny held various digital and data roles within FTSE 100 companies such as Aviva and Capita. Originally from Malta and now living in England, Jonny draws meaningful cultural parallels between Malta and Wales — both small but fiercely proud nations — emphasising community, resilience and shared values.
Driving innovation and inclusion in digital services
Jonny is passionate about transforming public services through digital innovation. His core career ambition is to create better environments for innovation in healthcare and beyond, championing inclusion by design, ethical practices and services that are both professional and people centred.

In his role with BCS Wales Hub, Jonny has outlined five key priorities:
- Raising the bar — driving digital professionalism through chartered status, shared standards and ethical practice
- Growing our own — strengthening the next-generation digital talent pipeline from primary school level, with a strong emphasis on retaining talent within Wales
- Leading with impact — positioning Wales as a safe, ethical sandbox for emerging technologies
- Breaking the mould — encouraging constructive disruption, amplifying unheard voices, and empowering communities to believe in change
- Acknowledging risk and owning responsibility — promoting transparency and shared ownership of challenges such as digital exclusion and fragmented standards
A platform for activation and amplification
Speaking about his appointment, Jonny said: ‘It's a real honour, and more importantly, a responsibility I take seriously. This isn’t just an accolade, it’s a chance to activate and amplify the voices, talents and ideas that already exist in Wales. I want BCS Wales Hub to be an engine room, not just a meeting point, for digital collaboration, experimentation and leadership.’
Jonny added: ‘I’m not afraid to challenge the status quo. Wales has a unique opportunity to lead in digital transformation, and I want to help unlock that potential.’
With extensive experience spanning the NHS, private sector and digital innovation, Jonny offers a strategic, connected and bold leadership style that crosses boundaries between government, academia and industry.
