The creation of the new Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade (BIST), bringing together the former Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), also marks a significant change in how technology policy will be delivered across government.
With some digital responsibilities returning to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and some to the Cabinet Office, it will be important that the new structure provides clear accountability and joins up work across AI, business growth, digital transformation and online safety.
As AI adoption accelerates, the UK will need more than investment and innovation. It will also require a trusted AI assurance profession, strong cyber resilience and higher professional standards for those responsible for the critical technology systems used across health, policing, education and business.
