Summary

  • Get the Nation Learning Week 2026 brings together organisations across the country to champion lifelong learning for everyone
  • BCS' research highlights the need for investment in digital upskilling and retraining in the AI era
  • BCS is working to support people at all career stages and from all backgrounds to acquire knowledge, confidence and professional recognition

The pace of technological change means that the skills we need to succeed in our careers, participate in society and navigate our everyday lives are constantly evolving, which makes the opportunity to continue learning throughout our lives more important than ever.

At BCS, we believe passionately in making IT good for society, and central to that ambition is ensuring that the benefits of technological progress are shared as widely as possible, particularly as artificial intelligence begins to transform the way we work, the jobs we do and the skills employers need.

Our latest research into AI skills and adoption found that 35% of IT professionals regard AI as the single biggest technology skills gap, while just 11% believe their organisation's AI retraining has been very effective, highlighting the considerable distance we still have to travel in preparing people for the opportunities ahead.

For you

Be part of something bigger, join BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.

For employers, government, and professional bodies alike, this presents an enormous responsibility to invest in meaningful education and professional development, creating opportunities for people to retrain, build confidence and adapt throughout their working lives.

Through our professional communities, educational partnerships, and commitment to developing recognised standards across our profession, BCS is working to support that ambition, helping people at every stage of their careers acquire the knowledge, confidence, and professional recognition they need to flourish.

We’re conscious that opportunities to learn have never been distributed equally, and that removing the barriers facing people from disadvantaged backgrounds, those returning to employment and those seeking to change careers must be central to any serious national conversation about skills.

By supporting Get the Nation Learning Week, we are joining organisations across Britain in making the case for lifelong learning, encouraging employers to invest in their people and championing a future in which technological change creates opportunities for everyone to participate, contribute and succeed.
