SYNOPSIS
This talk will focus on the issues and advancements in Remote Maintenance technologies in Challenging Environments, based on work at the UK Atomic Energy Authority centre for remote applications in challenging environments. It will cover inter-operable robotics, control systems, autonomy, and machine learning applied to challenging environments, such as a fusion reactor.

RACE is the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s centre for Remote Applications in Challenging Environments.

We make it possible to carry out tasks in hazardous and extreme environments.

For us a Challenging Environment is one in which people cannot work because conditions make it impossible or unacceptable.

These conditions are found in nuclear, and petrochemical facilities, space exploration, construction and mining, to name a few. The technical challenges to overcome might include high radiation, extreme temperatures, limited access, operation in vacuum and magnetic fields.

We use our unique skills in robotics and remote handling to develop solutions that work reliably, safely, cost effectively in the most extreme environments imaginable.

Our long-term goal is to design and operate plant and machinery assuming zero manual intervention for long periods.

We call this ‘RACE to ZERO.’
