Synopsis

Join us for the Sussex Branch April meeting. We will feature a talk from a Branch community member, a chance to discuss branch news and then free discussion and networking.

This month's speaker is Blay Whitby, Technology Ethicist and BCS Sussex Branch member. He'll be exploring the question "what do we mean by 'good software'?"

Blay says:

"You might think we would find this question easy to answer but in 2021 maybe things have changed. The old answer might involve things like performing accurately to specification and doing so with a very high level of reliability.

However, now we rarely start with a blank screen and a clear specification. Reliability too has become questionable in a highly interconnected world where someone else’s bug-ridden bloatware usually causes problems for your perfectly implemented system.

Perhaps the biggest change of the 21st Century is that, in the words of the BCS Code of Conduct, we make IT for everyone.

Nowadays we are perhaps far more concerned with usability and meeting the needs of users – who might indeed be anyone from small children to seniors with declining cognitive abilities – than with the technical aspects I have characterized as ‘the old answer’.

So what might characterise ‘good software’ in 2021?"

Our events are for adults aged 16 years and over.
