Synopsis

Throughout June, BCS Pride will be hosting discussions for university students with successful and inspiring members of the LGBTQ+ community. Each week a new speaker will be sharing their stories, their successes and failures, and their tips on how you can succeed as an LGBTQ+ person in STEM.

Some of the subjects discussed will include:

  • Early Career Steps
  • Journey to a PhD
  • Thriving in Tech
  • Career Journeys

Our speakers are:

  • Matteo Tabaro - 3rd year PhD student with Imperial College London (6th June, 16:00)
  • Dr Alfredo Carpineti - Astrophysicist, Science Write for IFL Science, Chair of PrideInSTEM, creator of the Astroholic (16th June, 18:00)
  • Abigail Simmons - Security Engineer and head of the Trans Tech Tent (21st June, 16:30)
  • Callum Akehurst-Ryan - Test Engineer, Test Lead, Project Manager and Agile Coach (28th June, 18:00)

About the speaker

Alfredo Carpineti

Alfredo Carpineti (he/him) is a gay Italian astrophysicist, science journalist, and social activist. He is the chair and founder of Pride in STEM, an award-nominated British charitable trust dedicated to supporting and showcasing LGBT people in science, technology, engineering, and maths.

Pride in STEM and other sibling organisations launched and continue to promote LGBTSTEM Day, the international day for LGBTQ+ people in STEM, happening globally on November 18. He was recognised as one of the 100 LGBTQ trailblazers by Attitude Magazine.

Our events are for adults aged 16 years and over.
