Synopsis

This is a continuation of a previous joint event in the collaboration between the Consultancy SG and the BCS IT Leaders Forum.

The aim is to build on the hybrid panel discussion: “How do we plan a career in leadership through consulting” held on 16 November 2023.

What we heard from all of the panellists last time out was how time in consultancy had helped them to become better leaders. The same panel will be returning and this time we are inviting anyone to attend this virtual event who feels that they would like to contribute to the round table discussion along with our panellists, or even just watch as the debate unfolds.

Our panellists as before are: Ali Law, Danny Major, Hank Marquis, Amit Modhvadia, Ann Moffat, Professor William Scott-Jackson, Dr Jane Wonnacott .

Introducing the discussion will be Dr David Miller.

David Miller PhD FBCS CITP FIET FCIM CEng DipM is an award winning former executive, Head of IT, business consultant, past chair of the BCS IT Leaders Forum.

The event will be Chaired by Antonio Hidalgo (Chair of the Consultancy SG) who will also at the end try to summarise the key points raised in the discussion and possible next steps.

Ali Law, Transformation delivery leader & CIO

This experience has been gained through a career that combines consultancy and corporate roles (in Banking and Insurance), developing an understanding of how these can contribute and create value to each other.

Danny Major, Chief Advisor and Founder

As Chief Advisor and Founder, Danny Major holds a career as an executive, board member, and advisor focusing specifically on the hyper-growth of software and software services businesses.

Danny has led and scaled a variety of enterprise functions giving him first-hand experience to the critical pillars which support the shift from start-up, to scale-up, through to the enterprise – including acquisitions and successful exits.

Through Danny’s career, consultancy has given him broad exposure to different areas of the business which has helped prepare him for executive, entrepreneurial responsibilities.

Danny is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and has been recognised and awarded by a variety of institutions including; the Institute of Directors, Global Sourcing Association, IEEE-SA Standards, and is chair and founder of a charitable foundation which supports educational institutions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Hank Marquis, an Executive Partner at Gartner, has a wealth of IT leadership and consultancy experience.

He's a BCS Fellow and Chartered IT Professional with a Ph.D. in ICT Organizational Leadership. Before Gartner, Hank was a senior leader at a Fortune 50 retailer. Before that, he held various technical and business roles within commercial and consulting firms. His job titles included Technician, Consultant, Analyst, CEO and CTO, and VP of Marketing and Sales across telecommunications, education, and high-tech industries.

A published author, sought-after keynote speaker, and dedicated researcher, he's driven business development and led teams across the US, Europe, Central America, and EMEA. Fluent in Spanish and English, a US Army veteran, Hank is deeply committed to fostering career growth through innovative lateral pathways.

Amit Modhvadia, CEO & CIO/CTO

A high-level CEO and CIO/CTO who has initiated and inspired many Business and Digital Transformations to benefit citizens, patients and financial consumers within the tax, local to national government and international banking corporations by utilizing consultancy skills to better serve the needs of the customer.

Even as a CEO, I have been an IT Consultant at heart always transforming customer needs to real life benefits which the customers can breathe, feel and relate to so that the customers can enrich every aspect of their lives.

Ann Moffat FBCS FACS

Ann Moffatt started work in the Information Technology Industry in 1959. She has professional experience at all levels including programmer, analyst, designer, project manager, company manager and she has served on several company Boards.

In 2001, Ann ‘retired’ to Hervey Bay. She is very active in the local community, using her skills in the ICT industries to raise awareness of the benefits that ICT can bring to regional communities

With USQ, Wide Bay Institute of TAFE and the Department of State Development, Ann established an incubation & innovation centre in Hervey Bay, The FACTOREE, Fraser Area Communications & Technology Open Resource Education Enterprise, was opened in March 2003 and was operational until 2009. Ann continues to work with her community advising on ICT issues, teaching community how to avoid and manage PC security issues through U3A and neighbourhood watch, mentoring students and local business people on opportunities in ICT. In 2015 Ann established the Silicon Coast Extracurricular Code School (SCXCS) to teach students in Regional and Rural Australia how to program.

Ann’s earlier career includes:-

Establishing and managing her own ICT services company, Technology Solutions.

Building to 100+ professionals working on a flexible basis from a home base and revenue of $4million pa. Major customers included Australian Federal Police, Digital Equipment, Goodman Fielder, IBM & IBM/IGSA, Intel, Optus & OPTUS Vision, P&O & P&O Ports, Sun, Telstra and Vodafone (1993-2000).

She is a Fellow of both the Australian Computer Society and the British Computer Society. She was Board Member of the NSW TAFE Commission from 1998 to 2000 and a Board member of the IT&T ITAB from 1999 to 2000. She was a member of the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE Council & the Hervey Bay TAFE College Council from 2001 to 2005. From 1998-2010, she was a Director of the Australian Computer Society Foundation, which advances IT through Education and Research. In 2004, she was appointed Chairman of the Wide Bay Burnett Regional Leaders Infrastructure and Lifestyle Group. Ann reported the findings of the group at the 2005 WBB Regional Leaders Conference and was keynote speaker at the 2005 Regional Youth Conference. She was a keynote speaker at ACIS in 2007.

In 2002, Ann was inducted into the Australian ICT Hall of Fame. She was the second person, and the first woman inductee. In 2005 USQ awarded Ann an Honorary Doctorate, which was conferred in May 2006. In 2011, Ann was inducted into the Pearcey Hall of Fame, which is the highest Australian professional award for a lifetime achievement in the ICT industries. https://pearcey.org . In May 2014 Microsoft listed Ann as one of 10 Australian Innovators. In March 2016 Ann was named as one of Advance Queensland’s Community Digital Champions.

Professor William Scott-Jackson, Professor at Oxford Centre for Employee Engagement

Following a successful career in IT, William has been researching, advising and practising leadership, employee engagement and strategic capabilities for over ten years. In partnership with the CMI, CIPD and Henley Business School, he and his research teams have been responsible for some of the most radical insights published in recent times.

William’s last book Transforming Engagement, Happiness and Well-being broke new ground, with recognition from the major figures in Psychology and HR. He consults to organisations worldwide on strategy, leadership and engagement and is advisor for various governments on subjects such as national happiness and wellbeing.

With an early career in computing, he has led teams, Divisions and organisations at all levels and has built and sold several innovative consultancy businesses.

Dr Jane Wonnacott FBCS CITP MIOD

Director and digital transformation professional with more than 20 years international experience gained developing and implementing world class IT, digital, and business change programmes for prestigious global organisations across multiple business sectors. A passionate and visionary strategist: creating innovative technical and commercial solutions for complex business issues, as well as acting as a reliable bridge between technology and business functions.

Jane headed up information services organisations in the pharmaceuticals industry between 1990 and 1999, was a principal and management consultant at CSC between 1999 and 2005, was Director of Information and Communications Technology in government between 2005 and 2019, and is now a non-executive director for a number of organisations and a BCS assessor for BCS Fellowship status.
