Synopsis
The 30th Annual INSPIRE Conference will be an e-conference, to encourage entries from the UK and overseas, from academics, researchers, post-graduate students and those from industry, again with no conference fee for authors or attendees.
This is organised by the BCS e-learning Specialist Group, in association with the CPG of the Institute of Physics.
Opening Keynote: e-learning resources and a system for lifelong e-learning - Dr Andy Wicks
There will always be a spread of abilities in a class. Some will get it immediately and get bored. Some will have difficulty and become disaffected. No matter how good the person teaching is, a proportion of those in their class will not feel it worthwhile. A better system might be for each to travel at their own speed, whilst being monitored for progress. The problem in a classroom should be "not trying" rather than "not achieving". This would send a more positive message. Positive students would have the opportunity to absorb and assimilate new techniques and knowledge, thereby strengthening their grasp of the subject and enhancing their ability to transition to new topics.
LYW (www.lyw4.life) is a free learning platform which looks at education differently. It does not seek to replace the current educational system, but rather to allow students to learn their way and tutors to monitor and mentor. It takes a positive, can-do, view of education rather than stick-and-carrot. ee https://youtu.be/0UmO0fHDUKg?feature=shared
Dr Andy Wicks was born in south London and credits his primary school with instilling his positive attitude to education. Being dyslexic, an unknown concept in the 1960s, he was deemed less able at his secondary school, but scrapped in to what is now the University of Greenwich (was Thames Polytechnic then) to read International Marketing. However, his first love was mathematics/statistics, which led him to study these part-time at the Open University. Andy started teaching part-time after a few years in industry as a statistician. After 34 years teaching mathematics and programming at Lewisham College he moved to teaching at the University of Greenwich for a further 14 years. Whilst there he also took a PhD in statistics in 2021.

Closing Keynote: T-Level route to degree - A Case Study of Success - Debbie Eacott and Benita Raphaels
Benita recently secured a higher-level apprenticeship with Coca-Cola after completing her Digital T Level, and her story is a fantastic example of the opportunities technical education can provide. Benita will share her experience and progression journey,
Debbie Eacott - Digital T Level lead - Teaching is at the heart of everything I do. For the past six years, I’ve led the Digital Software Development programme at South Hampshire College Group (Fareham College), where I’ve proudly served for over 16 years.
My approach is built on networking, teamwork, and collaboration, creating meaningful opportunities for T Level students to thrive. I lead progression-focused sessions and work closely with industry partners—including local technical forums, marine, and digital organisations to promote digital career pathways and inspire the next generation of talent.
I’m passionate about championing opportunities for all learners and working alongside incredible colleagues internally and externally to make this happen.
Academically, I hold an MSc in Leadership in Education and bring over a decade of experience with Awarding Bodies and External Agencies as a Principal Examiner, Writer, and Reviewer, with deep expertise in digital education and T Level qualifications.
And at the core of it all? My motto: “Passion, coffee, cake, and colleagues are the key to success as an educator.”
Because sometimes, the best ideas and connections happen over a good coffee and a slice of cake.
Benita Raphaels – Since I was little, I've been described as driven and determined and by my mum, affectionately called a horse. I've spent my formative years and teens in volunteering and leadership roles, ranging from being a student president and governor, a T-Level Ambassador, a radio co-host, as well as featuring in radio adverts and represented young people's voices in policing as part of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Commissions, where I championed several campaigns.
These and many other experiences, such as part-time jobs and colleg,e have equipped me with soft skills such as having initiative, collaboration, adaptability and communication, which, alongside my time on the T-Level, helped me land my degree apprenticeship at Coca-Cola Euro-Pacific Partners.
Taking home a trophy at the National Apprenticeship and Skills Awards in 2024 and achieving a Distinction in my T-Level have spurred a passion in me to be an inspiration to others and highlight that unconventional paths can lead to great destinations.
